Sisters Stun Family by Welcoming Identical Twin Girls Just Months Apart
One Pennsylvania family has been left amazed after two sisters not only became pregnant around the same time, but each went on to give birth to identical twin girls within just three months of one another.
Megan O’Brien, 29, and her older sister Sara Seyler, 32, both from Doylestown, never expected their pregnancies to mirror each other so closely. Twins had never appeared anywhere in their family history, making the outcome even more extraordinary.
Megan was the first to deliver, welcoming daughters Lilah and Josie in November 2021. Just three months later, the family did a double take when Sara gave birth to her own identical twin girls, Lennon and Parker.
Although Megan’s husband, Matt, is a triplet, there had been no indication that Megan herself would conceive twins — let alone that her sister would follow suit shortly after.
Megan still vividly remembers the moment she learned Sara was also carrying twins.
“My jaw literally dropped,” she said. “I started crying because there are no twins anywhere in our family. It felt unreal that she was having twins too.”
At the time, Megan was away celebrating a friend’s bachelorette party when Sara called following her first ultrasound.
“I assumed she was just FaceTiming to tell me how the appointment went,” Megan recalled. “But when I answered, she was crying, and I panicked, thinking something was wrong. Then she held up the ultrasound picture — and there were two babies.”
For Sara, discovering she was pregnant while her sister was expecting her first child brought mixed emotions.
“When I found out, I actually called Megan to apologise,” Sara said. “I thought she might feel like I was stealing her moment. I kept saying, ‘I’m so sorry.’”
Instead of tension, the sisters found comfort in navigating pregnancy side by side. Having each other to compare symptoms, ask questions, and share experiences made the journey easier.
“Sara had already been pregnant before,” Megan explained. “But this time, I was about three months ahead of her. She’d ask me what was normal, what to expect, and we just leaned on each other.”
Coming from a large family helped them adapt quickly once the babies arrived. With relatives frequently around, the noise and commotion felt familiar rather than overwhelming.
Megan’s twins, Lilah and Josie, were born at Doylestown Hospital on November 21, 2021. Lilah arrived at 1:33 a.m., weighing 4 pounds 14 ounces, followed one minute later by Josie at 4 pounds 6 ounces.
Sara’s pregnancy closely mirrored her sister’s experience. She described a difficult first trimester marked by severe nausea, followed by a relatively smooth second trimester. By the early 30-week mark, however, the physical strain of carrying twins became intense.
“With twins, your body feels full-term much earlier,” Sara said. “By around 32 weeks, everything becomes very uncomfortable.”
Sara delivered Lennon and Parker on February 8, 2022, at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Parker was born at 7:31 p.m. weighing 5 pounds 11 ounces, with Lennon arriving a minute later at 4 pounds 5 ounces.
Now adjusting to life with newborn twins, Megan says having her sister experiencing the same challenges has been invaluable.
“It’s not all perfect days,” she admitted. “There are tough moments, but we understand each other because we’re going through the same thing. That support means everything — and we get to laugh, share stories, and even dress the girls alike.”
Identical twins occur in roughly one out of every 250 pregnancies. However, research shows that women whose sisters have had identical twins are about twice as likely to experience the same rare phenomenon — something this family now knows firsthand.
