The letter arrived three days after her funeral, written in her unmistakable hand. I opened it at the same kitchen table where she’d balanced bills and brewed overly sweet tea. She raised me on pancakes-for-dinner nights and quiet sacrifice. She worked endlessly, patched shoes with duct tape, and said “no” to everything that looked like excess. When I was fifteen, I called her cheap. It was the last thing I ever said to her.
My parents hadn’t died. They’d gone to prison—after forging her name, stealing money meant for my future, and assaulting her when she refused to give them control. She had a choice: tell a six-year-old the people who made her chose greed over her, or give her a story that let her sleep at night.
She chose the lie.
