I Picked Up My 19-Year-Old Daughter After Her Summer Job — Then She Walked Out Holding a Newborn

The moment Sophie stepped out of the resort carrying a newborn, my hand froze on the car door. I had driven three hours with cold coffee, cinnamon rolls, and plans for our first dinner together after a long summer apart. Since my husband Daniel died five years earlier, Sophie and I had been unusually close, speaking almost every night while she worked at the lakeside resort. She had sounded happier there, laughing again and telling me about hiking, long shifts, and a housekeeping employee named Mia. Whenever I asked too many questions about Mia, Sophie changed the subject. Now a diaper bag hung from her shoulder, and the tiny baby in her arms couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old. I knew immediately the baby couldn’t be biologically hers; we had video-called throughout the summer. Sophie only said the baby’s mother was alive, safe, and needed several days before she could take her daughter back. The next morning, a resort employee told me something even stranger—Sophie hadn’t met Mia during the summer. She had taken the job because she was already searching for her. Mia was now nineteen, working exhausting shifts while trying to escape Laura’s pressure over how to raise her own baby. Mia came home with me that afternoon. When Sophie opened the door and saw her sister standing behind me, her face crumpled with relief before Mia hurried toward her baby. Later, Sophie admitted she had hidden everything because she feared telling me about Daniel’s other daughter would reopen wounds I had spent years trying to close. She was right about the pain, but wrong about what it would destroy. A few nights later, I found Mia holding an old photograph of Daniel, studying the father she had never met. Sophie had told her he hummed whenever he was nervous, and when I laughed and confirmed it, Mia smiled with the same crooked expression Daniel used to make.
