The house was completely dark when I reached under my son’s bed and touched something that made me stop cold. I started laughing too. The object itself had never changed; only my understanding of it had. Over breakfast, my son retold the story of me standing in the hallway with his controller stand as though I had discovered something extraordinary, and we both laughed. In daylight, the futuristic design actually looked pretty clever, and I finally understood why he had wanted to make it.
