I Found a Camera in Our Airbnb — Then the Host’s Reply Chilled Me

The notification was from Airbnb.

“Your review has been removed.”

I stared at the screen, convinced I had misunderstood it.

I opened the review again. It was gone.

Then another notification appeared.

“The host has reported your review as fraudulent and misleading.”

My wife leaned over my shoulder. “They’re saying we made it up?”

I felt a chill run through me.

We had photographs. We had taken pictures of the smoke detector, the tiny lens, and the room exactly as we had found it. I opened the folder on my laptop and attached everything to a message for Airbnb support.

Within minutes, someone from the platform contacted us.

They asked us not to return to the property.

They asked for the exact address.

They asked us to preserve the device and any photographs we had taken.

Then came the sentence that made my wife go completely silent:

“You are not the only guests who have reported something unusual at this property.”

Apparently, another couple had complained months earlier about a blinking light inside a bedroom detector. Their complaint had been closed after the host insisted it was simply an indicator light.

But our photographs showed something different.

The device wasn’t just sitting inside the detector.

It had been positioned deliberately.

The lens was aimed directly toward the bed.

We contacted the police and provided everything we had. Officers eventually visited the property and removed the device for examination. We were told that the investigation would determine whether it had actually been recording and who had installed it.

For days, I couldn’t stop thinking about how easily we had trusted the place.

The photographs online looked perfect.

The reviews were glowing.

The host had hundreds of positive ratings.

And yet, hidden behind an ordinary plastic cover was something none of those reviews had warned us about.

A few days later, Airbnb contacted us again.

The property had been suspended while the investigation continued.

Our original review was also restored.

But this time, I didn’t write an angry paragraph.

I simply wrote what had happened.

“Check the room. Check the devices. Trust your instincts.”

That experience changed the way my wife and I travel.

We still use rental platforms. We still stay in hotels and vacation homes. We still trust strangers when circumstances require it.

But we don’t assume that a five-star rating means everything is safe.

Because sometimes danger doesn’t look dangerous.

Sometimes it looks like a clean room, a friendly host, hundreds of glowing reviews—and a tiny blinking light you almost ignored.

And that was the part I couldn’t stop thinking about.

My wife noticed the light.

If she hadn’t looked up that night, we might never have known what was watching us.
