Britain’s Oldest First-Time Mum Finds Out She’s Pregnant After Cancer Scare

Essex, England — A 57-year-old woman who feared she was dying from ovarian cancer instead received the shock of her life: she was nearly 30 weeks pregnant.

Special-needs teacher Susan Tollefsen had undergone years of IVF abroad and believed her final treatment had failed when she suffered heavy bleeding and was told she had miscarried. Months later, her growing abdomen led doctors to suspect a tumour — until a scan revealed a healthy baby moving on the screen.

“I thought the sonographer was joking,” Susan said. “I was preparing for the worst — then suddenly, I was being congratulated.”

Susan and her partner, Nick Mayer, 46, had almost given up hope of becoming parents. Now, with a planned C-section days away, she is set to become one of Britain’s oldest first-time mothers.

“At 57, I never imagined this would happen,” she said. “I thought my life was ending — but instead, it’s just beginning.”
