A sailor spent long stretches away at sea, and every Sunday he video-called his young daughter back home. His wife had always treated those calls as the pair’s own private time together, deliberately leaving them alone so father and daughter could talk without interruption. It was a small family rule built on trust, and she never once broke it.
That changed on the Sunday after one call ended early, when her daughter casually asked whether she knew about the lady who slept in her father’s cabin. The woman, the girl said, had appeared on camera during a call, wore her father’s blue sweater, had helped make her birthday card, and had been described to her as their little secret. She had even talked to the girl about parents sometimes stopping loving each other, and asked whether her mother was still sad.
Alarmed, the mother confronted her husband by message and then by video call. He deflected until she demanded to speak to the woman herself. Wearing the blue sweater, the woman explained she had believed the couple had already separated months earlier and that the relationship was known about — and that she had only befriended the girl because the father had told her the child was struggling with that separation. On realising she had been misled, she took off the sweater and walked out.
The mother told her husband he would not be staying at the family home when he returned, and that they would discuss the future once he was back. She reassured her daughter that she had done the right thing by speaking up, and that she should never keep a secret that made her uncomfortable. The following Sunday, the girl asked her mother to stay with her during the call — and this time, she did.
