Christin, a mother from Gardendale, Alabama, had just stepped out for a brief errand when the unthinkable happened. She had left her one-year-old son, Lucas, with her boyfriend, believing everything would be fine. As she was calling to let them know she was on her way home, she heard a piercing scream in the background. Her heart sank as she rushed back, only ten minutes away. When Christin arrived home, she found Lucas in agony. His lips had swelled up to an alarming size, and he was crying hysterically. Christin described how her son desperately wanted something to drink but was unable to because of the pain. “So every time I would hand him a drink he’d get really upset because he couldn’t put it in his mouth because it hurt,” she said, heartbroken by her baby’s suffering.
After a night in the hospital, Lucas was finally well enough to go home. Christin, now in a state of emotional exhaustion, wanted to share her story to warn other parents about the dangers of seemingly harmless creatures in the yard. “A baby’s first instinct is to put something in their mouth and Lucas is so fast,” she explained. “I know that parents can’t watch their kids with 40 sets of eyes and I know how fast they are, but they need to watch them around bugs.”
