Actress Christina Applegate has a new memoir coming out called “You With the Sad Eyes.” While promoting the memoir, which she describes as “not an inspirational book,” she opened up to PEOPLE about her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS).
In the interview, Applegate explained that she spends most of her time in her bedroom either in or on her bed. This isn’t because she’s sleeping all day. Instead, it’s to try to be as comfortable as possible since moving around is painful for her.
However, there is one time of day that she not only leaves the bedroom but also leaves her house, and that’s when she takes her 15-year-old daughter Sadie to school. She explains, “I want to take her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves.” She adds, “I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.’ And that’s what I do.”
While MS has mainly confined Applegate to her home and her bedroom, she has also found freedom. She has learned to be open and honest about her life and her struggles. Her memoir is part of that, and so is her podcast MeSsy which she co-hosts with actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also battles MS.
In all honestly, Applegate explained, “My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow.” She added, “People’s lives, sorry for lack of a better term, f—ing suck sometimes. So I’m being as honest and raw as I possibly can.”
In her memoir, Applegate goes all the way back to her childhood to explain what it was like growing up with a single mom in Laurel Canyon, experiencing fame in her teen years, and her battles with both breast cancer and MS.
