The U.S. mom, who had endured a miscarriage, months of medical battles, and multiple heart surgeries for her firstborn, says the unexpected pregnancy has rewritten her family’s story in ways she could never have imagined.
A Roller-Coaster Start: Down Syndrome Diagnosis and a Life-Threatening Heart Defect
In 2016, at just 11 weeks pregnant, the couple received news that their unborn son had Down syndrome. The diagnosis brought grief, fear, and uncertainty.
“I was mourning the child I thought I was having,” she recalled. “We knew nothing about Down syndrome. It took time to learn, adjust, and rediscover our excitement.”
Just as they found stability, a second blow came: at 20 weeks, doctors discovered their baby had a serious congenital heart defect. One specialist told them it was “not fixable” and even recommended terminating the pregnancy.
“We were shattered. But we needed a second opinion.”
Days later, a cardiologist offered a glimmer of hope — the defect was operable. That word, she said, felt like “winning the lottery.”
A Fighter Is Born
Their son arrived on May 2, 2017. He spent 10 days in the NICU before going home, but within weeks was fighting for his life again. At four weeks old he went into heart failure, prompting an emergency return to the hospital.
At just seven weeks, he underwent open-heart surgery — the first of three major operations he would endure that year. Multiple complications, including a life-threatening clot and a devastating stroke, kept him in the hospital for nearly four months straight.
Doctors weren’t sure he would survive.
But he did.
Though he lost function on his left side and required tube feeding for months, the tiny fighter slowly regained movement and strength. Today, he continues therapy and defies expectations.
A Glimpse of Normal — Then Another Shock
After surviving a whirlwind first year with their medically complex child, the couple cautiously hoped to expand their family. With medical approval, they tried for a second baby in late 2018 and quickly conceived.
By the seventh week, she knew something felt different.
